Shirokaia Balka
A strongly Hellenized settlement ca. 1.6. km S of Olbia along the steep right bank of the S Bug and dating from the first half of the 6th to the first half of the 5th c. B.C.
Owing to erosion, much of the ancient site has been lost. However, excavations have uncovered the remains of six rectangular or circular semisubterranean dwellings, one of which contained a hearth and may have been used to dry grain. Among the pottery finds, local wheelmade sherds probably from Olbia were predominant. Most of the imported Greek pottery comes from the late 6th and early 5th c. although Ionian and Attic sherds of the late 7th and the first half of the 6th c. were discovered. The settlement seems to have been one of the first of many small agricultural settlements which appeared in the vicinity of Olbia.
